Aging Successfully in Community!

  • Unity of the Triangle

Isn't there a better place and a better way to house ourselves as we age than long-term-care facilities or home alone? We dream about living in an affordable, safe neighborhood where people know and care about each other, but does that exist?

What if...

What if you could live in a neighborhood of small privately owned homes clustered around shared green space and a common house? What if it was designed and run by you and your neighbors? What if the common house had suites for caregivers and a big kitchen and dining room for celebrations and community meals? What if this neighborhood was affordable, energy efficient and designed with the physical and social needs of seniors in mind? What if neighbors looked out for each other?

If this vision appeals to you, please join us for a "community conversation" about aging and your options for living the rest of your life, one of them being cohousing, a new model for housing seniors with dignity, independence, safety, mutual concern, and fun. A presentation will be followed by break-out discussion groups or Q&A.

Join us for an exploration of aging and the options available to us as we age and become less independent yet want to control our own destiny.

This presentation will be co-facilitated by Kayelily Middleton and Dona McNeill and others who are building our own retirement community so that we can age in our one-level accessible privately-owned homes and be interdependent rather than dependent on each other. The presentation will be 30 to 40 minutes followed by Q&A and conversation. Join us!

RSVP to Kayelily at cohousing@mindspring.com or call (919) 345-4608

What is Cohousing?

We will be presenting a program on Cohousing and Aging in Community for Wellspring at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Raleigh on Wade Avenue.

Wellspring is program of community building, spiritual growth, and faith formation workshops for all ages offered on Wednesday evenings (7:00 – 8:30 pm) from September through May.

Free child care is provided.

A new concept in home ownership for active adults is about to arrive in Wake County. It’s called cohousing and it refers to a community of individually owned homes clustered around shared community house and grounds. Cohousing communities are planned, owned and managed by their owners and are designed to foster strong ties among residents. The website cohousing. org, says “households have independent incomes and private lives, but neighbors collaboratively plan and manage community activities and shared spaces. The legal structure is typically a homeowners association, condo association or housing cooperative. Community activities feature regularly scheduled shared meals, meetings and workdays. … Cohousing makes it easy to form clubs, organize child and elder care and carpool.”

Raleigh Cohousing is a forming a community of forward thinking independent adults who want an alternative housing solution to the traditional options. We are seeking like-minded individuals and couples who have an interest in making this happen.

Senior Cohousing Presentation by Chuck Durrett

Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

4907 Garrett Rd, Durham, NC 27707

$10 suggested donation.

Cohousing is increasingly popular in the U.S. Individuals who value strong social relationships with neighbors are coming together to design their own cohousing communities. Values of cooperative community, home ownership, self-governance, and the ability to influence the design of the community drive this quickly growing housing option.

Chuck Durrett of McCamant and Durrett Architects is a key player in this much-needed alternative. Chuck will share his 25 years’ experience in designing socially vibrant and environmentally sustainable communities.
